Solution

Track Google News mentions of your brand and competitors

Search Google News for any name or topic on a schedule and get each article with title, source, date and link.

The problem

What gets in the way

Coverage moves fast. By the time someone forwards an article, the story has already been picked up elsewhere.

Alerts give you a stream of links, not data you can count, filter by source or feed into a dashboard.

The approach

How CrawlerData solves it

  1. Search Google News for each brand, product, executive or topic on the schedule you need, hourly or daily.

    Google News API
  2. news_results gives title, source, date, snippet, thumbnail and link.

    Google News API
  3. Store the link as a key to detect new articles between runs, and count coverage by source.

  4. Add a Google search to see top_stories and how the story shows up in the main results.

Example

One request, structured data back

date is the relative text Google shows, such as "7 hours ago". Record your request time to turn it into a timestamp.

What it costs

A worked example

Every endpoint costs 1 credit per request. Here is what a typical monthly workload costs with whole credit packs.

50 queries checked every hour × 24 hours × 30 days

= 36,000 requests a month

1 credit per request, so 36,000 credits a month.

Buy one month at a time

1 × Starter (50,000 credits) for $50.00

$50.00 / month

$0.0014 per search

Buy six months at once (best)

216,000 credits needed: 5 × Starter (250,000 credits) for $250.00

$41.67 / month

$0.0012 per search, 34,000 credits left unused after six months

Packs are bought whole, like in the pricing calculator. Credits are valid for 6 months, so buying ahead can move you to a cheaper pack. Failed requests are not charged. Prices exclude sales tax/VAT.

Good to know

Limits to plan for

  • You get the articles Google News shows for the query at request time, one page per request (page 1 to 10). It is not a full archive of past coverage.
  • date is relative text such as "7 hours ago", not an exact timestamp. snippet can be null.
  • Results depend on the country and language you choose. Monitor each market you care about separately.
FAQ

Questions

Are article links direct publisher URLs?

Usually. Some can come back as a Google redirect link (google.com/goto?url=...), which still opens the article.

How do I find only new articles?

Keep the links you have already seen and compare each run against them. Only the new links are new mentions.

Can I monitor coverage in other countries?

Yes. Set country and language for each market. Each market is a separate request.

What does an hourly check cost?

1 credit per query per hour. 50 queries checked hourly is 36,000 requests a month; the worked example on this page shows the cost.
